Standing proudly in the heart of Barellan’s main street, the Big Tennis Racquet is a must-see for anyone passing through. You won’t miss this impressive 13.8-meter-long replica created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Barellan and honour the town’s connection to tennis legend Evonne Goolagong-Cawley MBE AO.
A Wiradjuri woman, she was born in the Riverina and grew up in Barellan before moving to Sydney at 13 to train with her coach, Vic Edwards.
Made of wood, the racquet mirrors Evonne’s well-worn Dunlop, complete with her autograph. It’s scaled 20:1 and measures 13.8 metres in length, with a 1.25-metre fibreglass tennis ball. It’s a much-loved photo op for travellers so don’t forget to stop and grab a snap when you’re in town.
