Local legend suggests Sturt marked a tree on the same site as the memorial’s location, which stands on the northern bank of the Murrumbidgee River near Narrandera. The cairn marks the date of his passing through the area on 12 December 1829 and was unveiled during the Sturt centenary celebrations.
