Charles Sturt Memorial

The Charles Sturt Memorial honours explorer Captain Charles Sturt and his 1829-30 expedition along the Murrumbidgee and Murray rivers in search of an inland sea.

Considered one of most significant explorations in Australian history, it revealed vast tracts of land for future development in New South Wales and South Australia

Local legend suggests Sturt marked a tree on the same site as the memorial’s location, which stands on the northern bank of the Murrumbidgee River near Narrandera. The cairn marks the date of his passing through the area on 12 December 1829 and was unveiled during the Sturt centenary celebrations.

Set against the tranquil backdrop of the Narrandera Wetlands, the memorial offers a chance to reflect on this historic journey while enjoying the natural beauty of the area. A perfect stop for history enthusiasts and curious travellers alike.
