Northbank Bridge at Sunrise in Narrandera

Completed in 1912 using horse-drawn machinery, the Main Canal is the lifeblood of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. Just west of Narrandera, Berembed Weir is one of two main river offtakes from the Murrumbidgee River and feeds the Main Canal, as well as supplying water to Narrandera’s Lake Talbot.

The canal channels water to the region’s farms, supporting the growth of rice, fruits, vegetables, cotton, nuts and wine grapes. It also sustains the townships of Leeton and Griffith, along with several surrounding villages.
